APIs for GPT, embeddings, vision.

What is OpenAI?

OpenAI is the research lab behind GPT-4, ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Whisper. Their API platform gives developers programmatic access to these models for text generation, image creation, speech recognition, and embeddings. Instead of building AI from scratch, you call OpenAI's API and get state-of-the-art results.

For hackathons, OpenAI APIs are the fastest path to impressive AI features. Need a chatbot? GPT-4 can converse naturally. Need image generation? DALL-E creates art from text. Need to analyze documents? GPT-4 can summarize, extract data, and answer questions.

Why OpenAI Dominates Hackathon AI

OpenAI models are the best in the world at their tasks. GPT-4 outperforms open-source alternatives on reasoning, code generation, and instruction-following. DALL-E 3 creates higher-quality images than most competitors. Whisper is the gold standard for speech-to-text.

The API is also incredibly simple. Send a POST request with your prompt, get a response in JSON. No model hosting, no GPU management, no fine-tuning required. For hackathons, this means you can integrate AI in 10 minutes and spend the rest of your time on UX and features.

  • GPT-4: Best-in-class text generation, reasoning, code, and conversation
  • DALL-E 3: High-quality image generation from text prompts
  • Whisper: Accurate speech-to-text in 50+ languages
  • Embeddings: Convert text to vectors for semantic search and recommendations
  • Vision API: Analyze images and extract information with GPT-4V
  • Free tier: $5 credit on signup (enough for ~100 GPT-4 requests)
  • Pay-as-you-go: ~$0.01 per 1K GPT-3.5 tokens, ~$0.03 per 1K GPT-4 tokens

How to Use OpenAI in a Hackathon

Sign up at platform.openai.com and generate an API key. Install the SDK: pip install openai (Python) or npm install openai (JavaScript). In your code, import the library, set your API key, and call the model with a prompt. For GPT-4, use the chat completions endpoint with messages.

Never expose your API key in frontend code—it can be stolen and abused. Instead, create a backend endpoint (Vercel serverless function, Firebase Cloud Function, or Express route) that calls OpenAI. Your frontend sends a request to your backend, which proxies it to OpenAI securely.

  • Sign up at platform.openai.com and create an API key
  • Install SDK: pip install openai (Python) or npm install openai (Node)
  • Set API key as environment variable: export OPENAI_API_KEY="sk-..."
  • For GPT-4: client.chat.completions.create(model="gpt-4", messages=[...])
  • For DALL-E: client.images.generate(prompt="...", n=1, size="1024x1024")
  • For Whisper: client.audio.transcriptions.create(file=audio, model="whisper-1")
  • Never commit API keys—use .env files and add to .gitignore
  • Use backend proxy to hide keys: frontend → your API → OpenAI API

Pro Tips for OpenAI Projects

Use GPT-3.5-turbo for speed and cost, GPT-4 for quality. During development, prototype with 3.5 (10x cheaper), then upgrade to GPT-4 for the final demo. Set max_tokens to limit response length and control costs—hackathon demos rarely need 4,000-token essays.

Use system prompts to control behavior. For example: "You are a helpful assistant for college students planning hackathon projects. Be concise and actionable." This shapes GPT's responses to match your use case.

  • Start with GPT-3.5-turbo for prototyping (fast, cheap, good enough)
  • Upgrade to GPT-4 for final demo if you need better reasoning or accuracy
  • Set max_tokens=500 to limit response length and costs
  • Use system prompts to control tone, format, and personality
  • Stream responses for real-time typing effect: stream=True
  • Cache common responses to avoid redundant API calls
  • Use function calling to let GPT trigger actions (send email, query DB)
  • Monitor usage on OpenAI dashboard—set spending limits to avoid surprises
  • Combine with Whisper: transcribe audio → GPT summarizes/answers questions

Common Hackathon Use Cases

Chatbots and virtual assistants are the most popular use case—GPT-4 can answer questions, provide recommendations, or roleplay characters. For content creation, use DALL-E to generate logos, illustrations, or marketing images. For accessibility, use Whisper to transcribe lectures or meetings.

Advanced projects combine multiple APIs: Whisper (speech-to-text) → GPT-4 (summarize/answer) → text-to-speech (read response). Or: user uploads document → embeddings (semantic search) → GPT-4 (Q&A). The possibilities are endless.
